Notre Dame Football: 3 takeaways from road victory against Virginia
By Dante Pryor
Here are three takeaways from #9 Notre Dame football’s road victory against Virginia.
The #9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish took full advantage of playing against a true freshman quarterback tonight in their 28-3 victory at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong, the nation’s leader in total yards, was in pain trying to throw during warm-ups.
Since Armstrong could not go, true freshman Jay Woolfolk was thrust in the starting lineup. The Notre Dame defense came away with nine sacks and two interceptions of the young quarterback. The Irish exploited a mediocre offensive line and lack of running game as well.
Armstong is so important to the Cavaliers and tonight showed why. Armstrong’s ability to throw to all field levels is vital because the Cavaliers do not run the football well. Notre Dame seemingly took away every easy throw this evening.
Offensively, the Irish have returned to their running ways. Notre Dame ran for 249 yards tonight, led by Kyren Williams’ 70 yards. Jack Coan was precise tonight, throwing for 132 yards and three touchdowns. The Irish did not need Coan’s arm, however, as Notre Dame dominated on the ground.
Notre Dame had no problems employing the ground and pound tonight, playing against a backup quarterback.
Here are three takeaways from tonight’s game.
