Pitt Football: 3 takeaways from ACC Coastal-clinching win over Virginia
By Dante Pryor
2. A tale of two quarterbacks
Much of the country has decided that the Heisman Trophy is headed to Columbus and CJ Stroud or Tuscaloosa to Bryce Young. However, both Kenny Pickett and Brennan Armstrong made compelling cases to get an invitation to the ceremony.
Pickett’s performance this season has placed him atop many of the records in the annals of Panthers’ football. Pickett will leave Pitt as its all-time passing leader. This season is his best at Pitt, and today he was tremendous. Pickett did throw two interceptions but made key plays when needed.
Armstrong and the Cavaliers might have lost the game, but the redshirt junior had another phenomenal performance, throwing for 487 yards and three touchdowns. The Hoos needed all of those yards to stay in the game because the running game was ineffective.
Armstrong assumes so much responsibility offensively for the Cavaliers because of their lack of a run game. Armstrong’s ability to find the open receiver when they spread the field stresses defenses, and Armstrong can throw from boundary to boundary.
Also, Armstrong’s ability to throw the football deep keeps Virginia in football games, as demonstrated today even though they came up short.
