Ole Miss football fans are riding high tonight after beating rival Mississippi State in the latest edition of the Egg Bowl to improve to 10-2 on the season and likely head into the postseason as a New Year’s Six-bound team.

Like all Egg Bowls, this one got a little interesting at the end as Ole Miss was up 24-6 and Mississippi State tightened things up with a score and then responded to the Rebels’ next touchdown to make it a respectable 31-21. But with an untimed down left and Mississippi State on the 17-yard-line, Mike Leach called a timeout when the play didn’t much matter.

Lane Kiffin was clearly annoyed and confused and it led to a scramble by Will Rogers short of the goal-line to end the game with a 10-point Ole Miss win.

What did we learn from the Rebels’ big road win?

3. This rivalry is going to be fun to watch for a while

What more could college football fans ask for on a Thanksgiving night? Every year, Mississippi State and Ole Miss play in the Egg Bowl and while it can be an exciting game, rarely does it have a ton of postseason implications. But this one was different.

And it’s going to be different for a while.

Ole Miss came into the game looking for its first 10-win regular season in school history and Mississippi State was looking to finish the regular season ranked in Mike Leach’s second year. Both teams were already bowl eligible heading into this one, but it just felt like more was on the line.

But this is just the beginning.

Leach is building something special in Starkville and Lane Kiffin has something big brewing in Oxford. Both programs are headed in the right direction and both head coaches are colorful and perfect for the rivalry. This is going to be a Thanksgiving staple across the country for a while, not just in Mississippi.
