Advantages

Virginia Tech legend Frank Beamer built the program from a mid-tier program into a nationally relevant destination for recruits from the Virginia-Tidewater area. Beamer built relationships with high school coaches along the Eastern Seaboard to bring some of the best players in the country to Blacksburg.

The university has invested heavily in the football program and there are few tougher environments to play than Lane Stadium at night when the Hokies are good. Virginia Tech just completed work on expanding their strength and conditioning facilities this past march.

The Hokies ceiling is winning the ACC despite being a bit out of the way. Beamer won seven ACC titles at a time where pundits expected Miami and Florida State to dominate the conference.

This football program has great facilities, a great fanbase, and resources to compete in the ACC.

Disadvantages

Frank Beamer is one of a handful of coaches that made their job look easier than it really is. Blacksburg is actually closer to Tennessee and Kentucky than it is to Hampton, Virginia Beach, and Norfolk. Beamer ingratiated himself to the high school coaches in that area.

Cultivating and nurturing relationships with those coaches is crucial to the success at Virginia Tech. Also, the Hokies have more competition for recruits than they did in the Beamer era. Clemson, North Carolina, and the national recruiting powers (Alabama and Georgia) come in that area for recruits as well.
