National Titles: 7
Home Stadium: Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (80,126)
Heisman Trophy Winners: 7
Advantages
The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the iconic brands in all of college football. Oklahoma has owned the Big 12 since its inception nearly 30 years ago. The Sooners have a $370 million football facility that can attract recruits from all over the country.
The ceiling for Oklahoma is national championship contention. When the Sooners are rolling, Oklahoma is a 10-plus win team every season. When head coach Bob Stoops took the program over, he installed a quarterback-friendly Air-Raid offense.
This offense has attracted quarterbacks like Sam Bradford, Baker Mayfield, and Kyler Murray to the program. The offense has also attracted skill players like Adrian Peterson, CeeDee Lamb, and Sterling Shephard.
Disadvantages
The Sooners do not have a natural recruiting base. Despite this, the Sooners are one of the few programs that have not had a long down period. Norman is a bit of a tricky program to navigate because of its location.
Many of Oklahoma’s advantages are about the current state of the program. The Sooners move to the SEC in 2025. Whoever takes over for Lincoln Riley has to be a crack recruiter in the shark tank that is SEC recruiting.
Without that natural recruiting base like LSU, Georgia, or Florida, Oklahoma’s next coach has to be creative in how they recruit because the players the Sooners got in the Big 12 are going to have to compete with teams in the SEC.
