Oklahoma State struck first on Saturday afternoon, taking a 3-0 lead, but Baylor football stormed back to score 21 straight points and it felt like the game was all sewn up.
Mike Gundy and the Cowboys had other ideas. They scored 13 straight points, making it a one-possession game and they were driving with under three minutes left. Oklahoma State got to the goal-line with four downs to gain a yard, but Baylor shut the door to win its first Big 12 title since 2014.
What’d we learn from Baylor’s huge win over Oklahoma State?
3. Baylor’s defense stole the show
While we heard about Oklahoma State’s defense all week long and how the Cowboys were going to smother Baylor’s offense, it was actually the Bears’ defense that stole the show.
Baylor raced out to a 21-3 lead and the defense really held strong down the stretch. It was a field goal-heavy day for Oklahoma State as the Cowboys only had one touchdown and they probably should have had two. The Bears held Oklahoma State to a field goal after it had first-and-goal from the 1-yard-line.
That wasn’t the only goal-line stand for the Bears on the day as they stepped up with under a minute left in the game to shut the door on Oklahoma State from the 1-yard-line, winning the Big 12 title.
Outside of those two goal-line stands, Baylor also picked Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders off four times and they held the Cowboys to just 70 rushing yards on 40 carries.
