Georgia football fans and most expected a different result in Saturday’s SEC championship game. Here’s what’s next for the Bulldogs.

Kirby Smart talked this week about how much Georgia football wanted to win the SEC championship, essentially scoffing at the idea that all that mattered to the team was making the College Football Playoff.

Make no mistake, Georgia football and its fans wanted that championship. Maybe The Dawgs underestimated the Crimson Tide, although it’s hard to see how.

Turns out, we all underestimated Bryce Young who clinched the Heisman trophy in a masterful performance in a 41-24 win for the Crimson Tide.

The good news for the Bulldogs is that they aren’t done. They are going to get a berth in the College Football Playoff and if all goes according to plan, it will be Alabama and Georgia for the national title once again.

Will Kirby Smart ever win the big game?

Kirby Smart has won an SEC championship. But it would have been sweet to beat Alabama for one because the Bulldogs still haven’t beaten the Tide, despite all their success under Smart.

The difference came at the quarterback position.

Smart went with Stetson Bennett instead of playing JT Daniels and it was a costly choice. Bennett was 29-of-48 for 340 yards and three touchdowns but he also tossed two costly interceptions while Young was 26-of-44 for 421 yards and three touchdown passes against what most considered the best defense we’ve seen in years.

As Lee Corso says, “Not so fast my friend.”

While the seeding still needs to shake out, Alabama, Georgia, and Cincinnati all have a berth locked up after the Bearcats win over Houston. Now it’s down to Michigan (if it wins) or Notre Dame, Baylor, or possibly Iowa if the Wolverines don’t.

Either way, Alabama will be the top seed, and Georgia football, one way or another, will have to find a way to beat the Crimson Tide in order to win a national title.

So even though Georgia fans have to be crushed, don’t worry, a shot at redemption is likely just one win away.
