Oregon football is searching for its next head football coach and here are five candidates who  would be perfect fits for the Ducks.

When it comes to the Pac-12 conference, there is only one program that can challenge USC in terms of being elite and that’s Oregon football.

USC is going to be a force to be reckoned with following the hire of Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley. Riley was already recruiting the heck out of California and has only heated up since taking over the job at Southern Cal.

The move was a shot across the bow at Oregon football and others in the Pac-12. USC is serious about winning and taking back its spot atop the Pac-12.

That’s the message and while Oregon football seemed to be a in great position to fend off the Trojans’ challenge, that was before the Ducks lost head coach Mario Cristobal to Miami.

A Nick Saban disciple, Cristobal was the next big thing in the coaching world and was putting together great results at Oregon. But he was a Miami Hurricane at heart and went home.

Now, the Ducks are left without a head coach, and in the arms race that has become head coaching hires, it’s time for Oregon football to act.

Here are five candidates that would be perfect fits for the Ducks.

5. Chris Petersen, retired

Yes, it would be strange to reach out to Chris Petersen, who led Washington to glory, but there were rumors that TCU was going to make a run at him and it’s worth a phone call.

Petersen won at Boise State and Washington. He knows how to recruit the Northwest and has a national profile. Kids want to play for him and he’s proven he’s an elite head coach.

Oregon football fans may not like it, but if Petersen was hired, the Ducks wouldn’t skip a beat as a Pac-12 powerhouse.
