Sometimes the competition in a matchup means more than the teams in it. Here are four college football bowl games that will be better than the playoff.

Both the College Football Playoff bracket and bowl games have been set for the coming weeks, and there are a multitude of good battles to look out for. However, some being better than others is just the natural order of things.

The playoff bracket is, of course, supposed to showcase the pinnacle of college football greatness on an annual basis. That rarely turns out to be the case, though, as there is typically a blowout or two within it every single time.

Considering that this upcoming installment of the playoff includes a pair of powerful SEC teams and a Group of Five school, an exception to the aforementioned law will most likely not be seen this time around. While saying so might be rude, that does not make such a statement any less accurate.

Not all hope is lost, however, as some of those other bowl games are nonetheless worth keeping an eye on. Sure, some playoff extremists may think that they “don’t matter,” but that doesn’t mean that either you or me have to agree.

With that said, here are four upcoming bowl games that run good chances of being more entertaining than the College Football Playoff this season.

Honorable Mention: Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl (UTSA vs. SDSU)

To kick things off with an honorable mention, this one just misses the final cut due to the level of teams playing. This matchup between UTSA and No. 24 San Diego State fails to include any Power Five might, while also being the only one on the list that does not include two teams ranked in the College Football Playoff Top 25.

According to ESPN, the Roadrunners currently hold the favorite position (-2.5). The 12-1 Conference USA Champs are guaranteed nothing, though, as the 11-2 Aztecs are ranked for a reason. If the projected point spread is at all accurate, this game should be one to tune into.
