Alabama Football: Jahmyr Gibbs is going to be legit Heisman candidate in 2022
Jahmyr Gibbs has just announced his transfer to Alabama football and that’s bad news for the rest of the country. He’s going to be a Heisman candidate.
The rich, well, they keep getting richer. Alabama football is currently the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff and the favorite to win the national title yet again, but Nick Saban isn’t content.
While the Crimson Tide signed yet another top-five recruiting class, they’re keeping a close eye on the transfer portal. He warned everyone that the portal is going to only help Alabama and he hasn’t been wrong yet.
Last offseason, he signed Jameson Williams from the portal and he’s arguably the best receiver in college football this year as well as elite linebacker Henry To’oTo’o.
Now, he’s already landed former five-star cornerback Eli Ricks and on Tuesday he added Georgia Tech running back Jahmyr Gibbs who was arguably the best at his position in the portal.
The addition of Ricks is going to be huge, but Gibbs may have an even larger impact. In fact, Gibbs is good enough to really boost the offense to an entirely different level. He had 1,206 yards and eight touchdowns on 5.2 yards per carry in two years with Georgia Tech. He didn’t have an elite offense surrounding him so defenses were able to focus on him and he still put up numbers.
Just imagine what he’s going to look like when he’s just “another weapon” in that Tide offense. Alabama will have a Heisman-winning quarterback, elite receiving corps, a hopefully-improved offensive line, and now a Heisman-caliber running back.
Alabama has two straight Heisman Trophy winners (DeVonta Smith in 2020 and Bryce Young in 2021) and there’s a good chance that Gibbs could be the third in 2022.
Gibbs is going to elevate Alabama football
If you thought Alabama was good this year, you have to realize the Tide looked this solid without a true workhorse back and I think Gibbs will be just that.
We saw Kenneth Walker III make noise out of the transfer portal this season, winning the Doak Walker Award in his first year at Michigan State while finishing sixth in Heisman voting and I see the same type of season, or better, from Gibbs.
That offense next season is going to be terrifying and it’ll be interesting to see this offense with two legitimate Heisman threats. If you’re looking for a value bet, put some money on Gibbs to win the coveted award.
