San Diego State Football: 3 takeaways from Frisco Bowl win over UTSA
2. Lucas Johnson became ‘that dude’ for San Diego State
After beginning the year as the backup quarterback, Lucas Johnson remained positive and eventually got his shot. He replaced Jordon Brookshire but the two went back-and-forth as the Aztecs starters to finish the season, but it was Johnson who got the nod against UTSA and he didn’t disappoint.
Although he looked to be hobbling in the second half, he still toughed it out and led the Aztecs to their 12th win of the season, beating the Roadrunners by two touchdowns.
Not only did Johnson lead the Aztecs to a win, but he put up some impressive numbers. He finished the year strong and capped off his San Diego State career with his best game, passing for 333 yards and three touchdowns on 24-for-36 completions. He also had 15 rushing yards and the game-clinching touchdown dive in the second half.
San Diego State and Brady Hoke needed someone to step up at the quarterback position and it was finally Johnson as he ends his career with a heroic performance.
