1. Cameron Ward, QB Incarnate Word

Even before Martinez transferred and Frost was given another season with a new staff, it was clear that Nebraska football needed a change at quarterback.

For as good as Martinez was, he routinely struggled during winning time and it just never changed, even after four years of watching him commit the same mistakes over and over again.

Frost hitched his wagon to Martinez and it proved to be a mistake. A big one. Now, Frost has to find a quarterback or his tenure as Nebraska head coach will end and quickly.

Many of the top options have already found new homes but the No. 2 quarterback, Cameron Ward, has not and that’s why Nebraska football needs to go all in.

You might not know much about Ward or the school in the FCS he played for Incarnate Word, but he’s dynamic and some have said he could be the next Trey Lance, only he’ll be in the FBS and who knows, he could even be playing for Nebraska.

Ward is from Texas and for some reason, he was overlooked. But Baker Mayfield was a walk-on at one time, while Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers had a total of one Division-I scholarship offer coming out of high school, so a diamond slipping through the cracks isn’t shocking.

But all Ward has done at the FCS level is dominate. He was the top freshman QB in 2020 and actually led the FCS in passing yards in 2021 with 4,648 and 47 touchdowns. In two years, he has thrown 71 touchdown passes and could have as many as four years of eligibility.

Ole Miss needs a quarterback and missed on Dillon Gabriel, so Ward, who took a visit there before the dead period, could be the Rebels’ top option.

If Ward isn’t Nebraska football’s top quarterback target in the transfer portal, he should be. Purdy would be a great fit, but Ward could be a game-changer and that’s the kind of quarterback Nebraska needs to end this drought of five consecutive losing seasons.
