Harbaugh loves Michigan too much

Few head coaches have the connection to their team and their school that Jim Harbaugh does to Michigan. Not only did he play there but his dad was a long-time assistant there.

Bo Schembechler was one of his mentors and to him, the words “Those who stay will be champions” still mean something.

It was a phrase we heard often near the end of the 2021 Michigan football season. Hutchinson stayed; Harbaugh stayed and many others stayed too. Now, they are champions.

And now that Michigan football is so close to the peak, I can’t see Harbaugh leaving. His grind isn’t for everybody and it’s part of what makes him the perfect college coach. His fire and enthusiasm wear off in the NFL. In college, guys still shuffle in and out.

The Jackhammer returned in 2021 and it was the best thing that happened to Michigan football in a long time. And with how much he cares about the Wolverines, I just don’t see Harbaugh walking away from that.

This job means something more to him. He might leave one day. But I still think it’s more likely he retires from Michigan football than leaves for the NFL.

His love for the Maize and Blue will keep him in Ann Arbor, but not before he uses the interest to become one of college football’s highest-paid coaches again, as well as finding a way to help this Wolverines be more competitive with college football’s upper class.
