Casey Thompson is ideal QB for Scott Frost and Nebraska Football
Former Texas quarterback Casey Thompson has announced his transfer to Nebraska football and here are three reasons why he’s the ideal fit for Scott Frost.
Scott Frost is running out of chances as Nebraska football head coach and his final chance may depend on the Huskers’ newest addition — quarterback Casey Thompson.
Thompson is a former four-star recruit that was the starter last season for Texas. He didn’t open the season as the starter but finished that way in 2021 and led the Big 12 in touchdown passes with 24 compared to nine interceptions and 2,113 yards.
The top-300 quarterback has four years of college football under his belt but thanks to the COVID-19 rules, he will have two years of eligibility left with Nebraska football. Thompson is also a dual-threat option. His rushing numbers may not show it but he scored four touchdowns on the ground last season and at least is more than a pocket passer.
So will he be what Frost has been looking for? Here are three reasons why Thompson is the ideal guy for Nebraska football in 2022.
Thompson can succeed right away
With a new offensive coordinator in Mark Whipple, Thompson and the other quarterbacks will be on the same footing this spring as the quarterback competition starts in earnest.
Logan Smothers certainly isn’t going to give up the job and Nebraska football may not be done with quarterbacks in the transfer portal, but the Huskers don’t have time to bet on potential.
Frost needs a winning season in 2022. He has to get the Huskers to a bowl game and Thompson, who has played in multiple systems, is a great option. He’s experienced and he’s been productive which is exactly what the Huskers needed.
