2. Alabama’s offense just couldn’t overcome that Georgia defense

In the first matchup between these two teams, Alabama was able to score at will against that stingy Georgia defense which was considered one of the best in the history of the sport. The Tide dropped 42 points in a comfortable win and it looked like Nick Saban just had Kirby Smart’s number. That defense just wasn’t ready for the Tide.

After sitting out for a month and correcting some wrongs after the SEC title game loss, Georgia and Dan Lanning put together the perfect gameplan to beat the Tide and it was because of that defense. It got its revenge in a big way.

And it wasn’t exactly a dominant effort because Bryce Young still put up some yards through the air, but the Bulldogs shut down the run game and picked off the Heisman-winning quarterback two times — including the pick-six to seal the game. On top of that, Georgia held Alabama to four field goals which was the difference. That red-zone defense was elite.

The Crimson Tide just didn’t have the firepower to combat that stingy defense this time around.

It’s clear that those injuries at receiver came back to bite the Tide.
