Kirby Smart cements his place among coaching elites

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart has to be among the happiest people on the planet right now. Not only did he finally beat Nick Saban and Alabama, but he also delivered a national championship to his alma mater.

That’s a pretty rare feat. It’s also rare to be considered among the best head coaches in the sport and while Smart was already given that consideration before Monday night, he has now cemented his place as a great college football coach forever.

And unlike some of the other greats such as Bobby Bowden or Tom Osborne, he won’t be toiling for decades without a national championship to his credit.

Sure, there was talk that he couldn’t beat Nick Saban and Alabama — that he couldn’t win the “big one” even though he had already led the Dawgs to an SEC title.

Now the resume is complete and frankly, I don’t believe it will be Smart’s last national championship at Georgia. The Dawgs won’t flame out as LSU did. This team is ready to compete for multiple titles and with Smart leading the way, anything is possible.
