Winning the SEC is as hard as winning a natty

Different coaches and media pundits have said this over the years and Monday night, it proved to be true again as Georgia was the third SEC football team since 2011 to win college football’s national championship without even winning its conference.

Of course, that became much easier when the College Football Playoff opened the door for four teams to compete for the national championship instead of the two that got the chance in the BCS era.

And thank goodness that expansion took place. If we were still using the old BCS system, it would have been Michigan against Alabama last night and the Tide would have won easily.

Expansion was good because it allowed us to see the two best teams fight it out for the national championship and while that has now led to three All-SEC title games, two of those three were great games, so maybe we shouldn’t complain so much.

Whether you want to see college football’s playoff expanded from four to eight or 12 — the outcome will probably still be the same — but as Georgia and Alabama showed, it’s never a bad thing to decide who is the best team on the field.
