5 things we learned from Georgia’s National Championship win over Bama
An all-time great defense
Stetson Bennett deserves all the credit in the world and so do guys like Brock Bowers, James Cook, Adonai Mitchell, George Pickens, and others, but the Bulldogs won this national championship because of an outstanding effort from the defense.
Yes, Alabama was hindered by injuries to John Metchie and Jameson Williams, who broke out for a big play and injured his knee in the first quarter. But even if Williams had stayed in the game, Georgia’s defense was doing a much better job than in the SEC title game.
From the first possession on, the Bulldogs pressured Bryce Young. They sacked him a few times and hit him quite a few more. That didn’t happen in Atlanta and as the game wore on, Young started to make uncharacteristic mistakes.
Young threw for 369 yards but needed 57 attempts to do it. He was sacked four times and intercepted twice. Bama also ran 28 times for 30 total yards and Brian Robinson Jr. was held to 68 yards on 22 attempts.
Georgia football with Nakobe Dean, Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, Christopher Smith, Ringo, and so many others, left a lasting legacy as an all-time great defense — one that was needed to stop one of the best college football quarterbacks we have seen in a long time.
And in the battle of elite quarterbacks and great defenses, Georgia’s defense won the day.
