Texas A&M Football: First a recruiting title, then what?
The 2022 Texas A&M Football recruiting class is racking up accolades, but it’s what that much talent represents that will make the real difference for the Aggies.
Texas A&M football made national headwinds when they secured the No. 1 recruiting class in the history of modern recruiting rankings. Texas A&M had perennially fielded Top 10 classes under head coach Jimbo Fisher, but reaching the top spot put the Aggies on an entirely different level.
Over the past 10 seasons, two programs have attained the No. 1 spot in the 247 Sports recruiting rankings: Alabama and Georgia. Both programs have made multiple College Football Playoff appearances over that time and now, following the Bulldogs’ victory over the Tide this month, both have won national titles.
Expanding that recruiting threshold one spot further produces similar results. Again, dating back to the 2011 class, one decade ago, here is the list of programs that have finished No. 2 in the recruiting ranks: Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU, Florida State and USC. Apart from the Trojans, each other program on that list has won a national title. Sensing a trend?
That trend includes current A&M headman Jimbo Fisher who took home the 2013 National Championship on the heels of consecutive No. 2 classes in 2011 and 2012. Fisher never climbed to the top spot at Florida State, but he’s reached those heights now in Aggieland.
Fisher openly mulled the possibility of bringing such a historic haul of talent to College Station while shooting down rumors he would depart after the season to take the head coaching job at LSU. “We may recruit the No. 1…” he uttered before trailing off and settling with “We’re gonna recruit an unbelievable class.”
With the possibility of adding yet another impact player to the fold, the 2022 Texas A&M Football class still might not be complete. No matter how things go from here, though, Fisher and the Aggies are in elite company. All that’s left to do is get some hardware of their own.
