Texas A&M football is losing a lot to the NFL Draft and to the portal, including some big names that have been staples in the program. Who replaces them next season?

The Aggies are looking at about a dozen players headed out of Aggieland after the disappointing 2021 campaign. The year started out with a subpar performance against the likes of Kent State and honestly went down from there. Finishing with four losses and a lack of a bowl game to prove they can figure it out thanks to COVID-19- not exactly the resume you want to have.

Who is leaving Texas A&M football and who will be the “replacements” heading into 2022? Let’s break it down- starting with a big name in the transfer portal.

QB Zach Calzada Transfering to Auburn

Zach Calzada put everything he had into the 2021 season, but it just wasn’t enough to make a successful year. Yes, he beat Alabama. Yes, that was an amazing feeling for Aggies everywhere. However, the Aggies still finished 8-4 with losses to the likes of Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State.

The loss at Ole Miss may be excusable as the Rebels were actually extremely good this year, but the other three? Nothing short of disappointing for a team that was just an inch short of the College Football Playoff a year before. Now Calzada is heading to Auburn to replace Bo Nix and fight it out with TJ Finley for the starting position for the Tigers.

Replacement: The Aggies will be left with LSU transfer Max Johnson, a finally recovered Haynes King, and a true freshman wonder in Conner Weigman. That will be a battle to watch in 2022 for sure.

Do you go with experience in Max Johnson or do you go with the guy who was supposed to be the guy last season and let Haynes King swing for the fences so to speak after a less-than-stellar audition against Kent State in 2021? I don’t think Weigman has a horse in this race for the 2022 season, but look out in 2023 because King vs. Weigman will be a battle for the ages in Aggieland.

Kicker Seth Small headed to the NFL

Seth Small has been a name that has been synonymous with big moments in Aggieland the last couple of seasons. He made the game-winning kick against both Florida in 2020 and Alabama in 2021. Both of those moments were huge in their respective seasons and he will be remembered for them for years to come.

Replacements: It would make sense for sophomore Caden Davis to take this spot. Though, I am sure it will be an open competition as to who finally takes over the duties.
