Troy, once a power of the Sun Belt, has been relegated to a bit part with the rise of Coastal Carolina, Louisiana, and Appalachian State. The Trojans went 5-7 last year, don’t have a single player that went over 900 scrimmage yards, and will be breaking in a new coach in former Kentucky co-defensive coordinator Jon Sumrall. Carlton Martial, their superb linebacker who finished with 126 total tackles, is back though, but that only gets Troy so far. Rebs get a comfortable victory.

Final score: Ole Miss 48, Troy 6 (1-0)

The schedule only gets easier for Ole Miss before some key non-conference clashes, drawing FCS Central Arkansas up next. Central Arkansas has become a pretty solid FCS program under coach Nathan Brown, winning a conference title in 2019.

The Bears finished 5-6 last year, but showed promise, playing top FCS seed Sam Houston State to a 10 point game, and playing another FCS playoff team in Missouri State to a single-digit loss.

Expect an Ole Miss crushing here though.

Final score: Ole Miss 59, Central Arkansas 7 (2-0)
