Arizona State football players trash Jayden Daniels’ locker
Arizona State football’s Jayden Daniels announced that he would be exploring his options in the transfer portal. Soon after, his locker was trashed.
Thursday afternoon, Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels announced that he would be exploring his options in the transfer portal. Soon after the announcement, Arizona State football players were recorded trashing the former quarterback’s locker.
Jayden Daniels at Arizona State
Daniels arrived at Arizona State University as a part of the 2019 recruiting class. Daniels is a former 247Sports four-star recruit and was ranked as the 35th best quarterback in his class and the second-best dual-threat quarterback.
Since arriving at ASU, Daniels sat as a backup quarterback for his first season before taking over Arizona State’s starting quarterback in 2022. As a starter, Daniels took ASU to a 2-2 finish in 2020 and then an 8-4 regular season in 2021, before finishing the season with a 20-13 loss to Wisconsin in the Las Vegas Bowl.
During Daniels’ three-year career with the Sun Devils, he compiled 2,943 passing yards and 17 touchdowns while only throwing two interceptions. Daniels will also be leaving ASU with a 60.7 completion percentage and a passer rating of 149.2.
Daniels’ leaving the Sun Devils
On Thursday, Feb. 17, Daniels announced he would be entering the transfer portal. To say that this decision was not received kindly would be an understatement.
"“He sucks anyways” – ASU players as they trashed Daniels’ locker."
Soon after the news broke that Daniels had entered the transfer portal, an Instagram story popped up from one of his former teammates, Travez Moore. In the clip, multiple Arizona State football players are seen ruining the contents of Daniels’ locker and trashing him as a quarterback. The original Instagram story has since been deleted; however, multiple reporters and fans have screen recordings of the incident.
What does this mean for Arizona State football?
ASU football will now be without their starting quarterback heading into 2022. That in itself will be an issue for current head coach Herm Edwards, who will be heading into his fifth season as head coach at Arizona State.
One of the more glaring issues with this situation is a peek behind the curtain of Arizona State’s culture. If this is usual behavior for the Sun Devils, this is a for sure sign that Herm Edwards has lost control of his team. Players with respect for their coaches, teammates, and programs do not act like this.
For Daniels, it seems that he is escaping a team that did not want him anyway. However, for the Sun Devils, this could be a sign of toxic culture within the program and could very well be the first of many issues to come in the future.
