Boise State football had their worst season in 20 years last year. With most players back, can the Broncos get back on track for 2022?

Andy Avalos had a dreadful first season by Boise State football standards. The .538 win percentage was the worst since 1998 for the program.

While Bryan Harsin’s departure did leave the program without a coach they’d had for seven years, the situation seemed OK. Sure, they faced turmoil on the coaching staff. But, with 16 starters from the 2020 team back for 2021, the team severely underachieved.

Three offensive coordinators in three years became too much, and Boise State ranked 89th in the country in yards per play last year. It didn’t help that defense was hampered by injuries, but at least they held up for the most part.

While stud receiver Khalil Shakir is off to the NFL, there are some nice pieces back for this team. Bronco quarterback Hank Bachmeier finally had a full season to himself and played well. He’s back for 2022, as is massive 6-4, 220-pound safety JL Skinner. Plus, it helps that six of the eight all-Mountain West players on this team return for another year as well.

The schedule eases up, too. Instead of near-playoff team Oklahoma State in Stillwater, it’s a decent Oregon State team in Corvallis. BYU is still on the schedule, but the game is in Boise, and the Broncos won in 2021 anyways.

Here’s how Boise State’s 2022 season will play out.
