Texas A&M football has a loaded quarterback room ahead of the 2022 season, but who will start for the Aggies? Let’s break it down.

With the addition of the transfer portal and NIL deals, college football has been turned on its side. With so many players moving from school to school, there have been many exciting quarterback battles to keep an eye on.

Of the nation’s best quarterback battles, one of the top competitions will be in College Station at Texas A&M University.

After former Aggies’ quarterback Zach Calzada announced that he would be transferring to Auburn, a fellow SEC school, Texas A&M will now have an open competition for the QB1 spot.

Max Johnson

The Aggies should be very comfortable with this quarterback battle because of the sheer depth they are bringing in at the position. When it comes to quarterbacks, TAMU has it all right now.

Starting at the top of Texas A&M’s quarterback list should be their newest addition at the position: LSU transfer quarterback Max Johnson. He was one of the Tigers’ few shining stars in 2020 and in 2021, and with the right pieces around him, he could be a star.

Johnson is coming to College Station as a junior and has seen significant playing time in the SEC so far. Johnson is the most experienced of the Aggies’ current quarterbacks, which is extremely valuable in a conference like the SEC.

After former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron stepped down following the Tigers’ 2021 campaign, the Tigers would then start a very short coaching search. In December, LSU announced that it had hired former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly. Not long after, Johnson would find his way into the transfer portal and eventually find a home with the Aggies.

In Johnson’s most recent season at LSU, he passed for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions. Johnson completed 60.3 percent of his passes and finished the year with a 144.4 passer rating. These stats place Johnson among some of the nation’s top quarterbacks and should make him the front-runner for Texas A&M’s quarterback job.
