Michigan football will have plenty of space for its younger stars to have breakout seasons in 2022. Here are three Wolverines who could turn some heads.

Following Michigan football’s impressive 2021 campaign, the Wolverines will have plenty of space for its younger stars to have breakout seasons.

Here are three Wolverines who could turn some heads in 2022.

1. JJ McCarthy

Since JJ McCarthy’s commitment to the University of Michigan, he has become one of the most popular and talked about Michigan football players of the Jim Harbaugh era. Even though McCarthy has yet to start a game for the Wolverines, the former five-star quarterback seemingly bleeds maize and blue and could be Michigan’s next star passer.

In 2021, McCarthy displayed both incredible passing ability and other elite attributes such as his pocket awareness and speed. McCarthy has all of the weapons in his arsenal and, after sitting behind Cade McNamara for a season, might be gearing up for a monster season in 2022.

McCarthy threw for 516 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions on 59 attempts during his freshman season. McCarthy also rushed for another two touchdowns and finished the season with a 152.3 passer rating. Though fans have only seen a limited sample of McCarthy’s potential, the young quarterback has already put up impressive numbers both through the air and on the ground.

Though he will need to win the job from McNamara before he is given the starting nod, McCarthy is already a fan favorite and undoubtedly the most talented of the two Michigan quarterbacks. Even if McCarthy loses the starting competition this fall, he will still be given a key role in Michigan’s offense in 2022 before likely being handed the keys in 2023.
