Looking at college football recruiting’s 2023 class, here are the five teams that have gotten off to the fastest starts this cycle.

The 2022 college football recruiting class just wrapped up and things are heating up in 2023. At this point, just a handful of five-star recruits have made decisions and with visits about to start picking up again this spring and summer, expect plenty of action.

One of the biggest impacts the early signing period has had on college football recruiting is accelerating the calendar. Most recruits are making their decisions before their senior season of high school football begins.

That’s not always the case but most of the top-tier recruits will be signing in December. Some of them have already committed and with less than 10 months to go until 2023’s early signing day, here are five college football teams off to the hottest starts in the 2023 class.

5. Texas Tech

Texas Tech isn’t a college football team you normally talk about on a national scale when it comes to recruiting but the Red Raiders are off to a really strong start in the 2023 class and the reason is its hyper-local focus.

The Red Raiders hired Joey McGuire as head coach in large part because of his deep ties to Texas high school football and it’s paid dividends early for Texas Tech which has 13 commitments (all from the Lone Star State).

Five of those are ranked as four-star prospects in the On3 consensus rankings and the haul so far includes two top-200 defenders in edge rusher Isaiah Crawford (No. 182) and safety Brenden Jordan (No. 181).

It’s particularly impressive considering the fact that Texas Tech signed just four four-star prospects in its 2022 class.
