College football coaches are paid a lot of money and while it’s earned, some seem to be getting much more than they probably deserve.

If you’re a college football coach, you probably make a decent living. Head coaches bring in a ton of money at the FBS level and that’s why it feels like a ton is expected of these guys and when they don’t find success within 1-2 years, they’re usually cut loose.

Sometimes it feels like the leash is way shorter than normal like Willie Taggart at Florida State or Florida’s Dan Mullen while others seemingly get the benefit of the doubt like Scott Frost at Nebraska or Chip Kelly at UCLA or even Jim Harbaugh at Michigan before he finally got over the hump, beat Ohio State, and won the Big Ten title in 2021.

Other coaches have earned every penny of their paychecks like Dabo Swinney or Nick Saban who have both won national titles and have their programs at the top of college football every year.

But then there are some coaches who get massive contracts and haven’t quite earned them yet. Some have argued that a newer coach like Mel Tucker wasn’t quite worth the 10-year, $95 million contract Michigan State gave him, but he was a hot commodity and the Spartans had to pony up for him. Plus, he turned the Spartans around from bottom-dwellers in 2020 to contenders in 2021. He revived a program in danger of dying.

Other coaches, however, don’t have quite the same upward trajectory and don’t seem worth the massive contracts that they’ve signed.

These are, in my opinion, the five most overpaid head coaches in college football.

Note: We can make Mel Tucker an honorable mention, but I’m a believer that he’s going to earn his massive contract.
