The 2022 Texas A&M football recruiting class has a shot at yet another five-star talent. What’s at stake for the Aggies in their hunt for Lebbeus Overton?

Jimbo Fisher and the 2022 Texas A&M Football recruiting class made history a few short weeks ago. The Aggies signed the No. 1 class, the most decorated haul in the history of the 247 Recruiting Rankings. By any measure, that should constitute the pinacle of success for the program this offseason. But it might not be the end of the meteoric rise that is Texas A&M.

That’s where Lebbeus Overton enters the picture.

Up until recently, Overton was scheduled to sign next year as a member of the 2023 recruiting class. Now, he’s officially reclassified and announced his intentions to graduate early and enter the next phase of his college football career. Among the most prominent potential suitors? Texas A&M.

Texas A&M recruiting won’t miss a beat if Overton does in fact end up Oregon, Georgia or Ohio State. Failing to land an eighth five-star player in the span of one recruiting cycle won’t be seen as a failure by any stretch. But if Overton does end up in College Station, the reverberations will be just as loud as the Aggies’ newfound recruiting title.

A five-star recruit now ranked the No. 18 player in the 2022 class, Overton has suddenly become the most sought-after player in this cycle. Texas A&M already has seven five-star signees, three of which play on the defensive line. Adding Overton would give the Aggies four linemen with legitimate NFL potential. That doesn’t guarantee anything, but it would represent yet another step-change from the Texas A&M of old and the new era Fisher and Co. hope to usher in.
