UCLA Football: Way-too-early 2-deep depth chart projection for 2022
UCLA football had their best season yet in 2021 under head coach Chip Kelly. What will the depth chart look like for the Bruins this season?
UCLA football coach Chip Kelly entered the 2021 season as one of the coaches on the hot seat around the country. The Bruins were bringing back a lot of starters from the previous year’s team and there was pressure for UCLA to make a bowl game and maybe even challenge for the Pac-12 South title. UCLA did break through and get eight wins, but the season still felt like it could have been better.
After getting an early-season win over LSU, the hype for UCLA started to take off, but it did not last very long. The Bruins suffered a disappointing loss to Fresno State and they never really got back to the level of the LSU win. Kelly did manage to beat USC comfortably and ended the season on a three-game winning streak.
There is enough starting talent returning for UCLA to possibly make a push in the Pac-12, but Utah and USC will be the preseason favorites in the South Divison.
For the Bruins to be contenders this season, they are going to have to find a way to replace some of the talent that is now off to the NFL. On offense, receiver Kyle Phillips, tight end Greg Dulcich, and offensive linemen Sean Rhyan are gone to the NFL and leave sizeable voids. On defense, Otito Ogbonnia is going to be the guy that will be the hardest to replace.
UCLA has a soft schedule at the beginning of the year and that will be an opportunity to get some of these new starters’ experience.
Here is the depth chart projection for UCLA in 2022.
