2. Matt Campbell, Iowa State

Let me preface this by saying that I think what Matt Campbell has done at Iowa State has been impressive and there aren’t many coaches in the program’s history who have had his success.

I think Campbell is a good coach, but the respect and national attention he gets might be a little too much.

Campbell has turned Iowa State into a winner which isn’t easy to do, but he’s considered one of the top-three coaches in the league and I’m not so sure that’s the case. In six seasons with the Cyclones, he’s 42-34 and hasn’t won a conference title which isn’t too bad, but he’s always the subject of rumors at top programs looking to hire new coaches. He’s also been mentioned in NFL coaching rumors.

While a couple of years ago that would have made sense, I’m a little surprised these top programs continue to show such interest when he doesn’t seem to want to leave Iowa State and his mindset is a little questionable. He told reporters this year that it was “never my goal” to win the Big 12 title despite being a preseason favorite.

Yeah, that’s not exactly what you want to hear as an Iowa State fan.
