Pac-12 Football: Newcomers who’ll have an instant impact in 2022
By Dante Pryor
8. Cal: (Transfer), Jake Plummer, QB
After spending four years in West Lafayette, Indiana, former Purdue quarterback Jake Plummer heads back out west to play for the Golden Bears. California and head coach Justin Wilcox get a proven veteran quarterback in its QB room. Plummer should be near the top of the depth chart with the lack of returning experience at the position.
Chase Garbers, last season’s starter, declared for the NFL Draft rather than come back for a sixth season. Robby Rowell, sophomore Zach Johnson, redshirt freshman Kai Millner, and freshman Blake DeBisschop have no collegiate starting experience. Plummer is a solid veteran that will take care of the offense.
7. UCLA: (Transfer), Jake Bobo, WR
This player could have been Darius Muasau, transfer linebacker from Hawai’i. However, Bobo fills a hole left by tight end Greg Dulcich. Bobo is not a tight end; he is a solid possession receiver who knows how to get open and move the chains on passing downs. Bobo could be the security blanket that quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson needs.
Bobo caught 150 passes his last two seasons at Duke. At 6-foot-4 and nearly 200 pounds, Bobo can put himself between the defender and the ball and make contested catches. One aspect of Bobo’s game that could develop is as a red zone threat despite only three career touchdowns.
