4 most underappreciated college football head coaches
Kyle Whittingham
When it comes to college football head coaches, no one is underappreciated more than Kyle Whittingham who has been the head coach of the Utah Utes since 2005.
Since that time, Whittingham has won 67 percent of his games with the Utes and won multiple conference championships. Jim Harbaugh can say he’s won conference titles in two separate leagues and Whittingham can too — the Mountain West and the Pac-12.
That’s an achievement right there, especially since he was the head coach that guided Utah into the Pac-12 conference for college football and eventually led the Utes to the top, as they won the league last season with a win over Oregon.
Unfortunately, the Utes lost the Rose Bowl, but they have had success in major bowls under Whittingham who led the 13-0 Utes to a Sugar Bowl championship thanks to a 31-17 win over Nick Saban-led Alabama.
Utah still needs to prove that it can stay among the elites in the Pac-12 but the Utes have 10 seasons with at least nine wins under Whittingham, including that 2008 season where they finished No. 2 and for that, he deserves more appreciation than he gets now.
