Which teams could make their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2022? There are a handful of prime candidates.

Each year, there are teams that contend for the College Football Playoff that have never made the field before. Even last season, there were a handful of teams that could have made their first-ever berth in the playoff, and two actually did.

We saw some regular playoff threats like Alabama and Georgia make the field, but Michigan and Cincinnati made their first-ever appearances.

Michigan and Jim Harbaugh finally got over the hump, won the Big Ten, beat Ohio State, and made the playoff, ending a nearly two-decade-long drought of substantial success. Cincinnati became the first Group of Five team to ever make the playoff and while they were handled by Alabama, the Bearcats still have to be proud that they made history.

There are still some elite programs that have yet to make the playoff which has been around since 2014. We are approaching a decade of the playoff era and some historical powers are still without a berth in the field. Could that change in 2022?

These are the five teams that I think could actually make their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2022.
