3. Caleb Williams, USC

Caleb Williams burst onto the scene last year, replacing former Heisman favorite (in 2021) Spencer Rattler as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback. Now, neither player is in Norman. Lincoln Riley left for USC and Williams followed him. The former No. 1 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, looks like a future No. 1 pick. He ranked fourth in QBR last season and while he only threw for over 300 yards once, Williams tossed 21 touchdowns compared to four interceptions. And with Riley busy adding talented wideouts for the Trojans, Williams should be even better in 2022. He should make a strong run at the Heisman too.

4. Sam Hartman, Wake Forest

I’m not as high on Wake Forest as some others heading into the 2022 college football season but one reason to like the Demon Deacons is the return of star quarterback Sam Hartman. There are a number of talented quarterbacks ready to take this place in the college QB power rankings but Hartman had seven games with at least 300 yards a season ago for Wake Forest, as well as nine games with at least three touchdown passes. He only completed 59 percent of his throws (a number that needs to improve) but he also ran for 11 scores and nearly 400 yards. Simply put, with 50 total touchdowns to his credit, Hartman was one of college football’s most productive quarterbacks in 2021 and there is little reason to doubt he can do it again.
