Texas A&M Football: 3 storylines to follow in spring 2022
2. New stars on the offensive side of the ball
Losing Isaiah Spiller and Jalen Wyderymer to the NFL draft is not only going to put a damper on the outlook this spring for the offense, but it’s going to force Texas A&M to develop new stars.
Devon Achane is splitting time this spring between the track & field team and football and that means he’s probably not going to get a ton of reps in his new role as the lead back. So who will step up and prove to be an adequate backup for Achane this spring? Redshirt freshman Amari Daniels is a solid option as is fellow freshman LJ Johnson Jr. who was a highly-touted recruit.
It’ll be interesting to see who steps up as the RB2 this spring when Achane inevitably takes over the RB1 role after a breakout 2021 season in which he approached 1,000 yards.
And with the leading pass-catcher in Wydermyer gone, the Aggies will have to both find a new No. 1 tight end and top target. Sometimes it can be both, but Texas A&M needs someone to step up other than Ainias Smith who was the only receiver who had more than 300 yards in 2021.
Will Jake Johnson step up as an early enrolled true freshman as the top tight end or will it be Baylor Cupp? Maybe Donovan Green can take over when he gets to campus this summer.
What about at receiver? Will Evan Stewart step up and assume the go-to receiver role or will Smith take that next step?
