Max Johnson is aiming to get Texas A&M football to its first College Football Playoff ever and he has the tools to lead the Aggies there.

It’s been two years since Texas A&M football had a reliable quarterback. Jimbo Fisher had Kellen Mond leading the team for a few years which followed up Nick Starkel and the Aggies had two nine-win seasons in 2018 and 2020.

Texas A&M had most of its success when it had a quarterback it could trust, but it was clear that was not the case in 2021 as Haynes King was injured and Zach Calzada was forced to start.

The Aggies still finished 8-4, but that’s because the talent on the roster was just too overwhelming to finish any worse. And the roster is only getting better in 2022.

Fisher is bringing in the No. 1 recruiting class of all time and the Aggies are reloading at every position, but the major question mark is the quarterback position. Could this be just another 8-4 season with an underwhelming quarterback or will this be a special playoff-bound season with the right QB1?

Max Johnson comes in from LSU to give the position some stability and he’s one of the most underrated quarterbacks in the country.

In two seasons with the Tigers, following the great Joe Burrow, Johnson had 3,884 yards and 35 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. A 5-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a completion rate of 60 percent should get much more respect, but no one is talking about Johnson as being potentially the breakout star in the SEC in 2022.

Johnson has the arm, he has the IQ, and he has the leadership ability to lead this offense and while he still has to beat out King and Conner Weigman, he’s shown that he’s more than capable of having success as a quarterback in the SEC.

This may be just the piece Texas A&M has been missing in its national title puzzle.
