Michigan football needs to start building some momentum in the 2023 recruiting class and here are the top three targets the Wolverines need to land.

The 2023 recruiting class is supposed to be one of the best of the Jim Harbaugh era. After all, Michigan football is fresh off a win over Ohio State, a Big Ten championship, and a berth in the College Football Playoff.

However, Harbaugh’s dalliance with the NFL seemed to stall recruiting momentum and while many teams would love to be where Michigan football currently sits in 2023, with six commitments and the seventh-ranked class overall according to the On3.com team recruiting rankings, there is still a lot of work to do.

Michigan football has always recruited well, even when the program was struggling to win. But if the Wolverines want to truly contend for a national championship and beat Ohio State more than once a decade, the recruiting needs to ramp up.

Michigan did well in 2021 and 2022, signing two classes with five-star prospects near the top 10. But that’s not going to close the gap on Georiga or Alabama and if the Wolverines want to start doing that, here are three recruits they need to land in the 2023 recruiting class.

Dante Moore, 5-star QB

Dante Moore is the biggest no-brainer you could possibly have for this list. He’s from Detroit and is ranked by the 247 sports composite rankings as the No. 3 quarterback in 2023, as well as the sixth-best recruit overall.

If you added Moore to the program and had him waiting in the wings to follow J.J. McCarthy, that’s how you put together an elite run of winning for an extended period of time. Michigan has the talent in terms of the blue-chip ratio to compete for playoff spots and national titles every year. But getting over the hump requires an elite quarterback and Moore is exactly that.

How often does Michigan have a guy like that just down the road? Unfortunately, for Michigan fans, Notre Dame is the leader and has done a better job in this recruitment.

Harbaugh’s NFL interest really hurt the Wolverines in this one. Matt Weiss, the QB coach also hasn’t done a great job either and Michigan football needs to turn things around before it’s too late.
