Nebraska Football: 3 breakout candidates for spring 2022
You could argue that Casey Thompson has already broken out with Texas, but he had just one full-time starting season and didn’t blow anyone away.
Thompson passed for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns with nine interceptions over the course of 12 games and he also completed 63 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 157 yards and four touchdowns and while he’s not exactly the dual-threat that Adrian Martinez was, Thompson can run when he needs to.
The Texas transfer has less than 2,500 total passing yards throughout his career and 30 touchdown passes so he hasn’t technically broken out yet and I think he’s going to be a star for the Cornhuskers. He’ll have some solid pieces around him and he’s going to feel very little pressure in the race for the starting job.
Starting a quarterback other than Martinez is going to be weird to see in Lincoln, but it’s about time the Cornhuskers moved on and forward. Thompson is going to put up some big numbers this year and I think he’ll have a huge spring.
