Texas A&M Football: Aggies have built a true national title contender
With another five-star addition to the greatest recruiting class in history, Texas A&M football is armed with everything it needs to win a national title.
The Texas A&M football team probably isn’t going to win the national championship in the 2022 college football season, but if it happens in the next few years, don’t be at all surprised.
The vision that was in place when Texas A&M hired Jimbo Fisher away from Florida State is starting to take shape. The Aggies signed the greatest recruiting class in the history of the 247 sports composite rankings, which they added to Friday with the commitment of 2022 five-star defensive lineman Lebbeus Overton.
Which reinforces again that Texas A&M football is now a national title contender. I know Jimbo Fisher hasn’t won as much as A&M fans want yet. But his 2020 season was a glimpse of what’s to come and even with an average quarterback, he beat Nick Saban and Alabama last season.
And the talent level in College Station is only ramping up.
Overton gives the Aggies a ridiculous eight five-star signees in the 2022 recruiting class and four of those are on the defensive line — those are of the top six defensive linemen nationally too according to 247 sports.
That’s just an insane haul. However, this 2022 class also features five-star wide receivers, a five-star cornerback, and most importantly, a five-star quarterback in Conner Weigman.
Aggies have all the pieces to win college football’s ultimate prize
Weigman might be the real missing piece for Texas A&M football because as the Aggies learned last season, a mediocre QB can sink you in the SEC really quick.
But with the haul Texas A&M landed in 2022, plus four straight classes ranked in the top 10 overall, Fisher should have everything he needs to win now and not just the SEC, but the national championship.
Weigman will be the elite quarterback and joining him in this class are a pair of five-star wideouts ranked in the top 25. There’s also a pair of top-100 offensive linemen, three four-star tight ends, a top-5 running back, and everything else you could possibly want in a recruiting class.
The fact that elite prospects like edge rusher Enai White and safety Jacoby Mathews, two top-50 recruits overall, seem like afterthoughts when they would be the crown jewel for most recruiting classes is mind blowing.
This doesn’t mean that Texas A&M is going to dethrone Georgia or Alabama in 2022. But the Aggies might not even need to in order to make the playoff. If the Aggies beat every team but Alabama in 2022, they’ll have a great shot at making the playoff at 11-1.
It might take a loss from Georgia along the way because if UGA and Bama are both undefeated going into the SEC title game, they are both headed to the playoff, regardless of the result.
The Aggies might be behind the Tide and Bulldogs for one more season as their elite recruits get more seasoning, especially their five-star quarterback. But when all this talent comes to fruition and some should have a very early impact, this Texas A&M football program will be a legit national title contender.
A&M now has the coach, the quarterback, the skill position talent, and the talent in the trenches needed to win a national championship. The question is, will it happen in the next few years?
As I said at the start, don’t be surprised if it does.
