10 most overrated head coaches in college football ahead of 2022 season
Sensing a trend? Yet another Big Ten coach on the list.
The conference definitely has some good head coaches and even some underrated ones, but it also has its fair share of overrated coaches.
Pat Fitzgerald falls under the category of “overrated” head coaches from the Big Ten.
I’m sure I’ll get a ton of criticism for this one because people love Fitzgerald and his coaching style, but he’s always dubbed one of the best from the Big Ten and a top head coach in the country and yet he has one decent season every few years, on average, and somehow still has the best job security in college football.
I get that expectations at Northwestern aren’t exactly the highest, but following up the last two division title seasons with 3-9 campaigns would be unacceptable anywhere else.
Since Fitzgerald took over in 2007, Northwestern has seven seasons with six or fewer wins and nine with seven or more wins. That’s decent, but is it really good enough to be rumored for NFL head coaching jobs every other year? Spoiler: no.
