10 most overrated head coaches in college football ahead of 2022 season
As the only coach on this list with a national title as an FBS head coach, I’m going to catch a lot of flak for including Jimbo Fisher, but hear me out for a second.
I like Jimbo. He’s a good dude and clearly an elite recruiter, but that’s only half of what coaching is. He has fallen short of expectations in most of the eight seasons since that national title back in 2013, winning 10-plus games just three times with Florida State and never winning more than nine at Texas A&M since 2018.
Expectations at Texas A&M are 10-plus win seasons and SEC title contention and yet he’s never won double-digit games in College Station and he’s never won a division title.
Falling short of conference title games is what cost Kevin Sumlin his job at Texas A&M before Jimbo, but the recruiting has definitely improved. I think 2022 will be a very telling season for Jimbo. If he can take the most talented roster he’s ever had in College Station and win a division title or at least win 10-plus games, there should be a mass buy-in. If he falls short of that again, he should be on the hot seat.
I’m kind of surprised his job security hasn’t been questioned more, but fans love getting top recruits and almost winning 10 games, I suppose.
