3 questions still facing Nebraska Football after spring ball
Nebraska football wrapped up spring practices on Saturday and here are three questions going forward for the Huskers.
It would be easy to sit and talk about things we learned about Nebraska football this spring. But at the same time, did we really learn anything?
We certainly didn’t learn much from the spring “game.” It was thud tackling, and we didn’t see that much from the quarterbacks, especially expected starter Casey Thompson, who completed a few throws but didn’t play after the first few series.
That’s all well and good because the last thing Nebraska football needs are some unnecessary injuries. The offensive system is also still probably a work in progress with new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple calling the plays now.
But that doesn’t mean we need to be overly optimistic about what we saw from Nebraska football on Saturday in its red-white scrimmage and throughout the spring.
So here are three questions that still remain for Nebraska football as it heads into a do-or-die season for head coach Scott Frost.
Are the Huskers better at QB?
Thompson appears to have the lead in terms of the quarterback competition but with Chubba Purdy finally getting healthy and making an impressive throw up the seam to tight end AJ Rollings, it seems like there is still potential for a true competition in the fall.
Regardless of who winds up starting, we won’t really know if that’s going to be an upgrade for Nebraska until the live bullets start flying. The Huskers and Adrian Martinez decided to go their separate ways and it made sense for both parties.
Nebraska needs a more accurate passer and Martinez needs a team that doesn’t force him to be the end-all and be all for the offense. The Huskers do need Thompson or Purdy to be an effective passer next season and unless the QB play is better, it’s hard to see a bowl game happening.
