Texas A&M Football: Should Aggies be worried about 2022 QB battle?
Texas A&M football held its annual spring game on Saturday and the quarterback battle was anything but electric. Should the Aggies be worried?
Jimbo Fisher got a chance to show off his new-look Texas A&M football roster to the public over the weekend and while many were excited to see what the Aggies could provide in terms of newcomers with the best recruiting class in history, all eyes were on the quarterback battle.
Haynes King was the projected starter to begin the 2021 season but got injured early on and was forced to miss the remainder of the year.
Zach Calzada took over but has since moved on, opening the position up to King, LSU transfer Max Johnson, and incoming blue-chipper Conner Weigman.
There was good and bad from all three quarterbacks, highlighted by King showing off his wheels and proving that the injury didn’t set him back much. They all finished the day with less than stellar numbers:
- King: 11-for-33, 130 yards, two interceptions; 21-yard rushing touchdown
- Johnson: 13-for-31, 127 yards, two touchdowns, one interception; 69 rushing yards
- Weigman: 7-for-19, 116 yards, one touchdown
Sure, these numbers aren’t the worst but they’re far from impressive. This just goes to show that the quarterback battle is more confusing now than it was before spring ball.
King and Johnson are the favorites but neither separated themselves from the other. Weigman is the third option right now and he looked relatively shaky in the scrimmage but also showed promise with some good throws, including his touchdown toss.
But should this performance be worrisome to Fisher and the rest of the Aggies?
Honestly, I don’t think so. You can’t put too much stock into a scrimmage that means next to nothing to the team that has seen these guys practicing and getting better all spring. This was more for the fans to get a look at the team. Sure, it’s rather concerning to some fans that no one stood out as the clear QB1, but that’ll all get sorted out.
The positive to take away from the spring game is that there are three guys capable of taking starting snaps.
