Now that spring practices have wrapped up for Nebraska football, here are five targets the Huskers should pursue in the transfer portal.

Now that spring games are wrapping up across the college football world and rosters, as well as depth charts becoming more defined, the transfer portal will see a flurry of activity.

That’s just the way it works. The busiest times of the year are right after the season is over and early portion of the offseason, and then once again in the spring as teams like Nebraska football try to replenish their roster and fill certain needs.

The Huskers have already been busy in the transfer portal this offseason, adding 11 transfers total (JUCOs included) such as expected starting quarterback Casey Thompson, as well as the top challenger at QB in Chubba Purdy.

But after winning just three games a year ago, there are still some needs to fill, and here’s a look at five transfers Nebraska football should try to land this spring.

Ochaun Mathis, EDGE (TCU)

This name won’t surprise any Nebraska football fans as Ochaun Mathis has been a priority in the portal for the Huskers, who hosted him for a visit last weekend during the spring game.

Mathis had really good things to say to 247 sports about his visit and he also said that he will be making his decision by the end of April.

The former TCU standout is the top-ranked pass rusher available in the portal right now and started 12 games for the Horned Frogs last season while notching four sacks. Over the past two seasons, he had 13 sacks and 21 tackles for loss.

The issue is that Texas is the favorite. Former TCU head coach Gary Patterson is on the Longhorns’ staff and they have received the only crystal ball projections up to this point.

But Nebraska football has an immediate opening and a defense that could be really good with the right addition or two in the portal, so you never know.
