Former five-star RB lands at SMU

SMU football has had success with a former Power-5 transfer starting at quarterback in Tanner Mordecai, and the Mustangs are hoping that will work out again as they won the commitment of former Alabama running back Camar Wheaton on Tuesday.

Wheaton was a five-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class out of Garland, Texas. His final ranking was 34th overall in the 247 sports composite rankings and while some injuries hindered him at Alabama, he shouldn’t have an issue finding playing time at SMU next season.

When he was coming out of high school, Wheaton was talked about as a potential second or third-round draft choice. Yet, he didn’t receive any carries this season for the Crimson Tide.

However, that shouldn’t diminish his talent and with the history of great running backs in the SMU football program, this move makes sense, especially considering how good the SMU offense was already expected to be in 2022.
