4. Virginia Tech: Grant Wells vs. Jason Brown

New Hokies head coach Brent Pry’s first challenge is figuring out who is playing quarterback. Having that position solidified goes a long way in moving a program forward. The Hokies brought in Grant Wells from Marshall and Jason Brown from South Carolina.

The case for Grant Wells

Wells is a veteran who has played a lot of football. The redshirt sophomore was solid in two years as a starter at Marshall, throwing for over 5,600 yards and 34 touchdowns. You like that he’s played at a winning program and has led the Herd to consecutive bowl appearances.

The case for Jason Brown

Brown went to South Carolina to be a graduate assistant and pulled a Garner Minshew with the Gamecocks. Brown can play and would be a solid bridge quarterback if they had someone in mind to take the job in 2023. Brown performed well in SEC play, so you know he’s been tested.

What should the Hokies do?

This choice is a tough one. Wells and Brown are both solid pickups. Brown came from nowhere to earn significant playing time at South Carolina. Brown was 2-2 as a starter and completed just 55% of his passes. Wells is the more established quarterback and should be able to win the job.
