College Football: Top spring 2022 QB battles, Part 2

3. Nebraska: Casey Thompson vs. Chuba Purdy vs. Logan Smothers
Scott Frost brings in a new offensive coordinator with Mark Whipple from Pittsburgh. Frost has to trust Whipple with the offense since it is different from what Frost does. Texas transfer Casey Thompson is a good fit for the offense as a pocket passer. Chuba Purdy had issues staying healthy at Florida State and is an exciting foil for Thompson. Smothers could make some noise as well.
The case for Casey Thompson
Thompson played well for the Longhorns last season, throwing for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns. Given Whipple’s Air-Raid philosophies, Thompson has the arm and pocket presence to run what the former Pitt offensive coordinator wants.
The case for Chuba Purdy
Purdy is the better athlete and is a definite plus in the running game. The younger brother of former Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy has tools. Purdy could be a long-term play, given he is a redshirt freshman, but he could also put it all together during camp.
The case for Logan Smothers
Smothers, a Frost recruit, is more of what the Huskers did before Whipple. He could be a change of pace, sub-package type of player. The only way Smothers does not end up in the portal is if Thompson gets hurt or Frost wants to incorporate more read-option.
What should the Huskers do?
If the Cornhuskers truly go Air-Raid, Thompson is the guy to start. He plays a lot like Kenny Pickett. Thompson can put the ball anywhere on the field and does a good job taking care of the football. Most important, he’s the most polished of the quarterbacks.
