The 2021-22 HBCU FCS Football season was definitely one for the record books. Record crowds…Larger than life coaches…It was a season that put the unique nature of the HBCU football experience front and center on the national stage.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) was the epicenter for much of this past season’s excitement, with a Deion Sanders-led Jackson State program running the table in the conference and a new addition Florida A&M snagging an at-large bid to the NCAA FCS playoffs. The Celebration Bowl between Jackson State and South Carolina State out of the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) saw a level of national exposure that the game has rarely seen during its existence. Enter SWAC spring football.

There’s a good deal of excitement throughout the league with new coaching additions (Hue Jackson at Grambling, Eric Dooley at Southern University, Eddie Robinson at Alabama State, etc.) and an influx of talent from the transfer portal.

Let’s take a closer look at what we can expect as spring football in the conference runs its course. What better place to start this deep dive than Jackson, Mississippi with the program that arguably made the most waves of ANY FCS program in the country this past season.

JSU Head Coach Deion Sanders’ squad left an indelible mark on the conference in their first full season of play after COVID. Their journey to spring football was no different.
