The Washington Commanders moved down in the 2022 NFL draft but still landed a top-notch wide receiver in Jahan Dotson with the 16th pick.

Many people expected the Washington Commanders to pick a quarterback in the 2022 NFL draft but that all changed when the team traded for Carson Wentz earlier this offseason.

After that happened, the goal was to try to find him more help and after a trade down to the No. 16 overall pick, the Commanders did just that with the selection of Penn State wideout Jahan Dotson.

Grade of Commanders selection of Jahan Dotson: B+

While it was probably a little early for Jahan Dotson, it wasn’t that big a reach. He was projected to go 25th in our final first-round mock draft and he was highly productive for Penn State.

The Commanders could have tried to trade down again for better value at wide receiver but it probably wasn’t that easy and with the run on receivers beginning, the Commanders were smart to get their guy.

The issue with Jahan Dotson is that some view him as a slot receiver, however, he can do more than that. He’s only 5-foot-11, but Dotson has as good a ball skills as any player in the 2022 NFL draft. He can go up and get the ball a little like Greg Jennings back in the day.

The Commanders have said that they believe in Carson Wentz and adding a receiver that has 100-reception potential in Jahan Dotson backs that up. Plus, he can help on special teams too.

Overall, I like the pick especially because the Commanders moved down to get him.

Grade: B+
