NFL Draft 2022: Grading Giants’ No. 5 Pick of Kayvon Thibodeaux
By Kathryn Rose
The Giants picked Kayvon Thibodeaux with the 5th overall pick. How does this pick grade out for the Giants?
While many thought that the New York Giants would select a tackle, they instead selected Kayvon Thibodeaux from Oregon. The athletic edge rusher promises to be a game-changer on the edge.
Coming into college, Thibodeaux had huge expectations. He was the top overall prospect in high school, and his commitment to the Ducks was a true cornerstone moment for that program. In college, the young man blew past everyone he played, using his tremendous athletic ability to make offensive tackles look foolish.
During the combine, Thibodeaux tested as well as people thought he would. While it may feel like a letdown for him to be only the fifth pick, he lands in a situation where he’s sorely needed.
Grading Giants’ selection of Kayvon Thibodeaux
The Giants have decent edge rushers in Leonard Williams and Azeez Ojulari, but Thibodeaux will change the game. For a team that desperately needs a top-tier superstar, the Giants found one in Thibodeaux.
His tools are immense. He gains tons of ground on the first step, but also has enough strength to bull-rush tackles into their quarterback. He also combines that speed and athleticism with intelligent edge play. The understanding of quarterback contain he displays is top-notch, and he also can meet the ball at the mesh point with ease.
For a first-team all-American, he’ll be just as good in the pros and will be a great addition to the Giants. This kid is going to stick around for a long while.
